چکیده

The Taquari River basin (TRB) drains an area of 28,000 km in the plateau adjacent to the so-called Pantanal, a large floodplain area in midwest Brazil. It is characterized by sedimentary soils, primarily sandy soils, with areas of accentuated declivities and high erosive potential. These characteristics of TRB, associated with its intensive use and the mishandling of the soil by agricultural activities during the last 25 years have intensified erosion processes. This is evidenced by the presence of recent gullies and by the siltation of rivers of the TRB. The intensification of these processes causes the instability of the riverbed, and consequent flooding of large areas, leading to environmental, social and economic problems. These processes have already been reported by several authors. Direct estimates of sediment production related to agricultural activity are difficult to obtain for such a large and diversified area as the TRB, and no data are available at present. Historical records of suspended sediment loads for the Taquari River are scarce, although attempts have been made to compare such information. The lack of former studies for the characterization of this environment, prior to the expansion of agricultural activities in the plateau of the upper Taquari River region, makes it difficult to evaluate and compare past and present environmental impacts. Such evaluation can however be undertaken using Evaluation of the Siltation of River Taquari, Pantanal, Brazil, through 210Pb Geochronology of Floodplain Lake Sediments

Pb geochronology of flood events in large tropical river systems

Floodplain sedimentation removes particles from fluvial transport and constructs stratigraphic records of flooding, biogeochemical sequestration and other aspects of the environmental history of river basins—insight that is enhanced by accurate geochronology. The natural fallout radionuclide 210Pb, often employed to date lacustrine and marine sediments, has previously been used to determine flo...

Relationship of mercury with aluminum, iron and manganese oxy-hydroxides in sediments from the Alto Pantanal, Brazil.

Sediments from nine floodplain lakes in Pantanal were analyzed for a large-scale (300 km) survey of mercury (Hg) load in sediments and soils of the Alto Pantanal and to study the relationship between Hg and reactive aluminum, iron, and manganese oxy-hydroxides. The results were compared with the Hg content in river and stream sediments from the Poconé gold mining area, where Hg has been extensi...

How does the Taquari River influence in the cladoceran assemblages in three oxbow lakes?

This study examined the cladoceran assemblages in three oxbow lakes of the Taquari River floodplain, near the transition between the plateau and the plain. We sought to answer the following questions: does the Taquari River function as a geographical barrier or dispersal corridor for Cladocera? Can different degrees of connection induce different structures in the assemblages in each lake? Clad...

Pu DEPOSITIONAL SIGNATURES AS A VIABLE GEOCHRONOLOGICAL TOOL IN THE AMAZON BASIN

Anthropogenic radionuclide signatures associated with nuclear testing are increasingly utilized in environmental science to explore recent sedimentation. In this study, we assess the suitability of Pu radioisotope analysis in floodplain lake environments in the Amazon Basin to form geochronologies during the 20 century. The 240Pu + 239Pu (240+239Pu) signatures in six sediment cores indicate sed...
